Common Mistakes When Investing in Facebook and Instagram Ads

If you have spent money boosting posts on Facebook or Instagram and still see no sales, you are not alone. Many small-business owners in Costa Rica feel that digital advertising is just a money-draining machine. You might have paid for clicks, watched the numbers rise, and then wondered why the cash register stayed silent. The frustration is real, but it usually comes from a series of avoidable mistakes.
The problem you are dealing with
- You launch ads without a clear business goal, so the results you track do not reflect real sales.
- You treat likes and comments as success, while the real need is a reservation, a purchase, or a booked service.
- The images or videos you use feel generic and do not speak to the local audience, so viewers scroll past without acting.
- You have no system to follow up with the people who click on your ad, and the interest disappears.
All of these points create the feeling that digital advertising simply does not work, and the natural reaction is to stop spending or to keep spending blindly.
Why it happens
- Unclear objective – When the campaign is created only to “get more reach” or “gain followers,” the platform shows the ad to people who may be interested in looking, but not in buying.
- Broad targeting – Selecting “Costa Rica” or “all adults” is like casting a huge net in the ocean without knowing which fish you want. The message reaches people who do not need what you offer.
- Disconnected creativity – Using stock photos or generic videos that do not show your shop, your staff, or your product makes the ad feel impersonal. In Costa Rica, locals appreciate authenticity and a sense of place.
- No follow-up process – The ad ends with a click, but there is no form, no WhatsApp number, and no quick message to keep the conversation alive.
- Wrong metric focus – Measuring only impressions or reactions hides the real performance. What matters is a conversion: a sale, a reservation, or a captured lead.
Practical solutions you can start using today
- Set a concrete goal – Decide whether the campaign is meant to generate online orders, table reservations, or contact leads. Each goal has a specific ad format and a clear way to measure success.
- Target with precision – Use the data you already have about your customers (age, interests, neighbourhood) to build custom audiences. For instance, if you run a restaurant that serves traditional Costa Rican dishes, target people who follow local food pages and live within a 10-km radius of your location.
- Create authentic content – Photograph your dishes with good lighting, show your staff serving, or add a short drone clip of your hotel’s beachfront view. An everyday example: a soda shop in San José that records a 15-second video of the daily menu, adds a caption “Order now on WhatsApp,” and uses that clip as the ad creative.
- Add a clear call-to-action – Use buttons such as “Book now,” “Call,” or “Send message” that take the user directly to the desired step without extra hops.
- Install a capture process – Link the ad to a simple form or a WhatsApp number that records the name and interest of the prospect. Follow up within a few hours with a personalized message.
- Measure real conversions – Set up the Meta pixel (it works for both Facebook and Instagram) to record a purchase, a reservation, or a message. Review those numbers regularly to understand which audience and which creative are actually delivering sales.
- Optimize and repeat – Identify the visuals and copy that generate the most conversions, allocate more budget to those, and pause the ads that only generate clicks without sales.

What we have seen in real campaigns
These are figures from accounts we manage, taken directly from Meta:
- Boxing República: by splitting campaigns by audience, between November 2025 and February 2026 young people messaged at ₡199 per conversation and adults at ₡765. With a single campaign for everyone, that difference would never have shown up.
- Caninos: with one campaign per service, from September to December 2025 grooming cost ₡353 per conversation and walks ₡1,852. That made it possible to move the budget toward what paid off.
- Naty Bienes Raíces: in July 2026, ₡66,223 brought 85 conversations; in August, ₡109,185 brought only 60. Raising the budget does not always bring more results: you have to measure every month.

The lesson repeats: a clear goal, one campaign per audience or per service, and checking the numbers every month.
